At the heart of every child’s agency journey is someone who believed in them.

From Hesitant Learner to Confident Leader: Deendayal’s Journey as a NIPUN Champion

“How one boy’s dream to become a teacher set him on a path to transform both his life and others”

At Kiratpur Primary School in Junawai block of Sambhal, a quiet transformation is taking place—not just in classrooms, but in the hearts and minds of young learners and it is giving them “agency”. One such story is that of Deendayal, a once-reticent student who turned his struggles into strength and became a symbol of hope and leadership in his school.

A Quiet Dream, A Powerful Determination

Deendayal was not always the confident figure he is today. In his early days, he found school intimidating. Struggling with reading and writing, he often stayed silent in class, unsure of himself and disengaged from learning.

But behind that quiet exterior lived a powerful dream—to become a teacher.

He had seen the impact of a good teacher in his own life and was drawn to the idea of helping others learn. Even when his academic performance faltered, his belief in the power of education remained strong.

With time, Deendayal made a decision that would change the course of his life. He convinced his parents—who were unsure about the importance of regular schooling—to let him attend every day. This shift in commitment marked the beginning of his transformation.

Finding His Footing Through Peer Learning

As part of the school’s implementation of the NIPUN Bharat Mission, Deendayal was introduced to the concept of peer learning—a model that emphasizes learning with and through peers, giving children the agency to decide how they want to learn. The approach clicked with him. It not only allowed him to revisit foundational concepts at his own pace but also made him feel less alone in his learning journey.

With consistent effort and growing confidence, Deendayal began to improve. Teachers noticed his progress. He started participating in class, helping others during group activities, and showing the early signs of a natural leader.

His journey came full circle when he was officially recognized as a NIPUN Champion—a peer leader responsible for guiding younger students in foundational learning.

Leading with Empathy and Confidence

Today, Deendayal mentors four Grade 2 students in Hindi, helping them identify letters, sounds, and gradually build reading fluency. His approach is patient and playful—he uses songs, storytelling, and games to make learning fun and relatable.

He knows firsthand how hard it is to struggle, and this empathy shapes his leadership. For the children he teaches, Deendayal is not just a senior student—he’s a guide, a friend, and a reminder that growth is always possible.

His transformation from a hesitant learner to a confident peer mentor stands as a testament to the spirit of the NIPUN Bharat Mission, which aims to ensure foundational literacy and numeracy for every child.

A Role Model in the Making

Deendayal’s journey is far from over. His dream of becoming a teacher has only grown stronger. But what makes his story remarkable is that he’s already living that dream—in his own small way, inside his school, every day.

He represents what happens when a child is not just taught, but trusted. And in doing so, he inspires others—students, teachers, and parents alike—to believe that change begins with belief, and leadership begins with learning.

At Kiratpur Primary School, stories like Deendayal’s remind us that every child carries potential—and when that potential is nurtured through trust, peer support, and opportunity, it can light the way for many more.
